Abstract
Vertical handoff is the basic requirement of the convergence of different access technologies. It is also the key characteristic and technology of Wireless Mobile Internet. The existing handoff triggering algorithms were analyzed and a set of novel performance evaluation models for vertical handoff in heterogeneous wireless networks were provided based on mobile node's different motion models. Two metrics, matching ratio and average ping-pong number, were defined to evaluate the performance of vertical handoff algorithms. Based on the proposed models and metrics, the performance of two vertical handoff algorithms was compared: hysteresis based algorithm and dwelling-timer based algorithm. The results show a very good match between simulation and analytical results.
