Abstract

Confronted with frequently occurring natural hazards and mounting property, life, and economic losses, catastrophe modelling that serves as a tool for estimating potential losses from major events has been advanced significantly in the past decade. This paper briefly reviews catastrophe modelling and its applications in the insurance industry, and introduces major overseas developers of catastrophe modelling, including private modelling companies, university-based research centres, reinsurance companies, reinsurance intermediaries or brokers, and government agencies. A list of recent literature on the topic is also assembled. It is hoped that such information will be useful for disaster insurance research in China.
