Abstract
Evidence is presented that the internal structure of VPs containing auxiliaries in German exhibits two alternative structures. It is shown that precisely this sort of ambiguity is predicted when the analysis of Nerbonne (this volume) is combined with the standard GPSG analysis of auxiliaries. A semantics for these constructions is given in which their lack of ambiguity is accounted for in terms of semantic type lifting of the auxiliary verbs.
