Abstract
The article discusses the social role of libraries with a focus on responses to a call to privatize the functions of libraries through the Amazon company from writer Justine Hyde. The author examines the reaction of her Vietnamese father to public libraries, the use of libraries by minors and other socially marginalized groups of citizens, and the enrichment of civic society through libraries.
