A simple and effective 3x1 image slicer for coupling into three rectangular fibres

Abstract

Image slicing is an important technique to reconcile large fibre apertures on sky with high resolving power for astronomical spectrometers at medium to large size telescopes. We present a simple and effective image slicer that produces a three by one image slicing configuration, where each slice is coupled into a separate rectangular cross section fibre. A telecentric imaging system is used to produce a magnified image of the fibre output. Two separate mirrors are inserted into opposing sides of the image at approximately 12 degrees to create three separate slices: a straight through central slice, and two singly reflected slices. Each slice is then coupled with its own telecentric imaging system into a rectangular fibre. The whole system is optimised for efficiency.
