Abstract
As Network-on-Chip (NoC) architectures evolve to support complex multi-core and many-core systems, efficient routing becomes critical for sustained performance. Among these, proactive adaptation-based routing strategies anticipate congestion and adjust paths in advance, improving network efficiency, fault tolerance, and energy management. This paper surveys proactive routing techniques in electronic 2D NoC architectures, analyzing their approaches and limitations. Our study classifies strategies into congestion-avoidance and reliability-enhanced routing techniques. Furthermore, this study identifies key open challenges and suggests future research directions for maintaining long-term system stability and efficiency. By synthesizing insights from existing research, this survey provides a structured framework for advancing scalable and intelligent NoC routing.
