Abstract
It was once argued that a taxonomy for History teachers and the study of history was inappropriate or premature because there was no agreement about what should be taught as History in schools and how it should be taught. It was generally agreed however that the goal was historical thinking, but because of concerns about the cognitive appropriateness of historical materials for secondary school aged students there was no consensus as to what historical thinking might actually entail and how it might be achieved.
