Abstract

Multi-object slit spectroscopy with a wide-field telescope is potentially a very effective way of collecting large quantities of data for statistical analysis on a wide variety of astronomical object-c1asses. A pilot-model system with 40 channels has been developed for the 1.2-metre UK Schmidt telescope, and has been extensively tested with photographic detection of the spectra. The commissioning of a dedicated cooled CCD camera in the immediate future is expected to lead to the rapid implementation of a user service with the system.
