Abstract

The literacy ability of Korean students continues to decline. The biggest reason is that more time is spent using smartphones or the Internet than reading books.
Today's students need to have literacy skills to read and write not only texts in books, but also digital texts using electronic devices such as smartphones and computers.

The purpose of this study is to enhance students' digital science text literacy in the context of science education. To do so, we engaged 10 elementary school teachers in a collaborative teacher training program designed to introduce teachers to the cognitive, affective, and behavioral factors related to digital science text literacy that are necessary for promoting improved literacy among students.

We sought to determine the effectiveness of the program on teacher learning and student literacy outcomes by analyzing how participation affected teacher knowledge and understanding about digital science text literacy.
Next we examined how teachers’ knowledge and understanding impacted on their practices and self-efficacy after conducting a student education program with these teachers (~200 elementary school students).

The results of this study offer science teachers and educators a means for increasing students’ digital science text literacy skills. We offer specific examples of how teachers can support students to use reading strategies in an online environment to read digital science texts and to develop abilities to effectively select and evaluated science text information in the rapidly digitized world.
