Abstract

Security is an important concern in the design and application of active networks. In this paper, we have considered some of the issues involved in the design of security services for active networks. In particular, we have looked at authentication, integrity and access control services in a smart packet based active network architecture. We have discussed the different types of authentication and access control mechanisms that need to be supported in a secure active network environment and the types of security header information needed in the provision of these services. Finally, we have briefly mentioned a sample of applications where active networks can be potentially useful and where security issues are significant.
