Abstract
The literature on the nature, diagnosis and assessment of agoraphobia is reviewed. Factors relating to aetiology, natural history and clinical course are evaluated, together with factors involved to the development of agoraphobic avoidance. The efficacy of exposure, symptom control, and fear reduction procedures are discussed, together with future developments likely to enhance treatment outcome.
