Abstract
Alien Citizen is a collaborative zine exhibited and distributed to thousands of visitors at the leading art exhibition Documenta Fifteen, which contains contributions by Safdar Ahmed, Can Yalcinkaya, anti-racist Muslim death metal band Hazeen, focusing on their musical and creative collaboration with the Kurdish-Iranian refugee and heavy metal musician Kazem Kazemi, as well as members of the Refugee Art Project and many others — Miream Salameh, Tabz, Zeinab Mir, MN in collaboration with Alia Ardon, Izabella Antoniou and many others.
The title of the zine comes from the work of Mae M. Ngai who said: ‘Alien citizenship… derives from the idea that non-European peoples are racially or, in modern expression, culturally backward, that they are unable or unwilling to assimilate, and that they are unfit for liberal citizenship. Racism thus creates a problem of misrecognition for the citizen of Asian or Latino descent and, more recently, the citizen who appears to be Middle Eastern, Arab, or Muslim.’
