Abstract

In this paper, we review our work into the fabrication of fiber-coupled waveguide chips for the development of fully integrated mid-infrared laser sources. We demonstrate the femtosecond laser direct inscription of high index-contrast waveguides into mid-infrared transparent fluoride and fused silica glasses and discuss the feasibility of utilizing nonlinearly coupled waveguide arrays in chalcogenide glass as saturable absorbers for ultrashort-pulsed fiber lasers in the 3-4 µm range.
