N2 - A low profile, coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed folded slot antenna is presented. Artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) is employed in the structure to make it unidirectional. The design of folded slot antenna (FSA) having bi-directional radiation pattern is first illustrated. AMC and Perfect electric conductor (PEC) are used as a reflector with FSA for achieving uni-directional radiation pattern. Comparative study of PEC and AMC loaded FSA is shown. Overall thickness of the proposed AMC loaded FSA is only λ0/17.72 at the design frequency of 1.82 GHz. measured results confirm the utility of AMC by enhancing the gain of ∼ 3 dB in the broadside direction. This low-profile antenna with uni-directional pattern could be a good candidate for GSM (1.71-1.93 GHz) applications.
