Abstract

An active circuit which behaves like a “cold” noise source is described. The circuit, which uses a gallium arsenide FET is given the name COLFET. The appropriate theory is developed and practical circuits described using the circuit. Equivalent noise temperatures of less than 50 K have been measured for a 50–Ω source at 1400 MHz.
