Abstract
Experimental work relevant to the origin of andesites is reviewed. Diagrams summarize the phase relations of tholeiite and andesite under various P-T ranges and under dry, water-saturated, and water-undersaturated conditions. The two main controlling factors in the formation of calc-alkaline andesites are: 1) the role of water derived from subducted oceanic crust, and 2) the presence of thickened crust in island arcs and continental margins. -A.H.
