Abstract

We use a novel modal simulation method to study the optical absorption properties of silicon nanowire arrays, which are being considered for 3rd generation photovoltaics. We have previously found the strong absorption to be derived from a small number of resonant modes and we now study the absorption as a function of angle of incidence. We find that the same few modes dominate the absorption mechanism and that the absorption remains high up to 35° off-normal irradiation.
