    Abstract

Anxiety disorders are prevalent in older adults but are not a normal part of aging. This article examines the epidemiology of anxiety in late life, including issues of comorbidity. Age-related factors that may influence the experience and presentation of anxiety symptoms are discussed, followed by an overview of available symptom measures for assessing anxiety in older adults. We review the effectiveness of psychological interventions and pharmacotherapy for geriatric anxiety disorders, including in special populations such as residential aged care and dementia. Finally, issues related to professional training for working with older adults are considered.
