Abstract

Asthma is the leading chronic illness in children and adolescents worldwide. Youth with asthma have been shown to be at increased risk of psychological disorders, and anxiety disorders in particular. Anxiety in youth with asthma is associated with significant emotional and financial cost to individuals, their families, and wider society. Yet, there is limited understanding of the factors associated with the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders in youth with asthma—and this, unfortunately, has translated into a lack of evidence-based treatment options for this population. This chapter provides an overview of the current research on anxiety in youth with asthma and includes practical information about how to adapt cognitive behavioral treatment for youth anxiety to account for an individual’s asthma status. We conclude the chapter by highlighting the need for further research to improve outcomes and increase treatment access for anxiety in youth with asthma.
