Abstract
We consider the problem of optical pulse compression by cross-phase modulation in Bragg gratings-the ''optical pushbroom'' effect. Interpreting the effect of the moving pump as inducing Doppler shifts on the weak probe pulse, we find a simple approximation equation of motion that yields very general conditions for an observation of the compression effect.
