Abstract
One of the key features of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is the reoccurrence of upsetting, intrusive thoughts. Despite considerable progress in both the psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment of OCD, only approximately half of the patients benefit substantially from treatment when drop-outs are considered. To meet the need for additional treatment, our group developed a new cognitive technique aimed at reducing intrusive thoughts (association splitting). This technique is based on the so-called "fan effect" of associative priming and supports the formation of new, and the strengthening of existing, neutral associations. The result of pilot studies confirm the effectiveness of this approach.
