Abstract

This article analyses the decoration program of the tomb of Saroy and seeks to determine whether the owner as "author" can be recognised.

An important function of tomb inscriptions was to preserve and project the identity of its owner; an analysis of this material should therefore cast some light on the owner as an individual. Is it also possible to identify the involvement of tomb owners in the selection or composition of texts, pointing to their “authorship” and revealing something of them as individuals? This article considers the Theban tomb of Saroy (TT 233) and probes the question of whether, and if so to what extent, the available data enables one to identify his involvement in choosing, arranging and even composing its texts.
