Abstract

(Chemical Equation Presented) A facile synthesis of β-functionalized γ-hydroxybutenolides was achieved using a Baylis-Hillman reaction followed by singlet oxygen oxidation. The conversion from 3-furfural was regio- and diastereoselective.
