    Abstract

Cerium lasers as directly tunable light source were examined. Cerium-doped LiCAF and LiLuF have sufficient gain bandwidth to support femtosecond pulse generation and amplification. Cerium lasers are useful in areas such as combustion diagnostics and lidar. All-solid-state lasers exploiting cerium-doped fluoride as the gain medium have broad tunability and high outputs in the 280- to 300-nm wavelength range.
