Abstract

Children today are undeniably living in a digital age. This chapter explores this concept and what it means for young children in their homes and educational contexts. Here we focus on the concepts of ‘healthy’ digital technology use, where technology concerns are balanced by appropriate and careful use. Given the constant evolution of technology and growing research about young children’s technology use, we present an overview of current research and identify some key issues that educators, parents, and carers face. We explore selected cases to exemplify inappropriate technology and media use and highlight some potential affordances of technologies that may present benefits for young children when used well.
