Abstract

Molecules of symmetry D2d and S4 are achiral but following excitation to their orbitally degenerate electronic states are Jahn-Teller unstable and may deform to new equilibrium structures which are chiral. Enantiometric species are formed with equal propability. In the presence of added chiral molecules the exact equivalence of energy levels between enantiomers is destroyed. Vibronic transitions to the differentially perturbed excited states should display circular dichroism of readily measurable strength.
