    Abstract

Speechreading is analyzed and empirical results from studies of normal hearing and hearing-impaired subjects are reported. Speechreading is discussed with reference to two aspects, coding and guessing. Among other things, it was concluded that excellent speechreaders must be able to shift between different coding strategies and also be able to apply different guessing strategies.
