Abstract

Although there are up to 1 million words in the English language (McCrum, Cran, & MacNeil, 1992, p. 1), writers frequently use the same word for very different approaches. Designations of critical and prefixes of post are two such terms that frequently recur in contemporary social science but with different meanings. In this chapter we use both terms as we offer a brief guide to critical approaches to race and schooling. In particular we explore the central elements of Marxist analyses; the emerging field of critical race theory in education; and post-structural and post-structural feminist approaches to race politics and raced identity.
