    Abstract

"Cross-dressing" is a relatively neutral term that allows for multiple interpretive possibilities. If it is dissociated from the popular presumption that it is inherently entwined with the issue of sexual, rather than just gender, identity, it linguistically marks a very simple act – the crossing of cultural boundaries related to the wearing of various articles of gender-specific clothing. The plethora of motivations behind the act of cross-dressing, and the issue of whether such motivations can be categorized as either transvestite or transsexual (or otherwise), are left "veiled."
