C.S. Peirce's Pragmatism

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

C.S. Peirce is often credited as the originator of pragmatism. Peirce’s development of a “pragmatic maxim” in the late 1870s was a direct influence on William James’ account of pragmatism some 20 years later. Here, we will trace out the details of Peirce’s pragmatic maxim, and how it functions as an account of meaning and tool of inquiry, before briefly comparing it with William James’ own, Peirce-inspired, pragmatic maxim.
