    Abstract

This collection of five solo performances was commissioned by the ABC as part of the Artist in Residence activities during the month of July 2024. This short set presents an overview in miniature of compositions from the Jazz canon and two re-imagined originals:

    Title of Work(s) — Writer/Composer — Duration:
    St Thomas — Sonny Rollins — 00:01:32
You Don’t Know What Love Is — Gene de Paul — 00:03:18
My Favourite Things — Richard Rodgers — 00:01:12
Ode to Abe Snake — Andrew Robson — 00:01:45
    The Serpent — Andrew Robson — 00:01:18

This research project addresses the following research question: In what ways can a selection of original and standard jazz repertoire provide a foundation for musical and artistic expression in a short-form solo context?

The recording format (single-take video and a Neuman M49) and the online distribution of these recordings required careful selection of repertoire and an approach to performance that foregrounded the composition in a clear and succinct manner.

These performances were filmed and released to coincide with the broadcast of five 75-minute radio programs featuring playlists selected and introduced by Andrew Robson. These were released each week during the month of July 2024. Each video was distributed via the ABC Jazz webpage and shared via Instagram.
