Data brief: homophobic bullying in Queensland schools

Research output: Book/ReportOther report

Abstract

The following Data Brief is submitted to Janet Berry of Queensland Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (QLD PFLAG) for viewing by The Queensland Department of Education Training and Employment (QLD DETE) by Dr Tiffany Jones of the University of New England, on the 12th of February, 2013. It provides a short overview of data relevant to the Queensland education context, collected for the PhD research project 'Sexual Subjects: GLBTIQ Student Subjectivities in Australian Education Policy' (Jones, 2012) and accepted in peer-reviewed academic journals (including in Jones & Hillier, 2012). This research was based on a mixed methodology, including legal and policy analysis (over 80 national, state and sector education policies), key informant interviews and cross-analysis of new data on the education context for 3,134 Australian GLBTIQ students. The overview is intended to assist in underscoring the need for a distinct Queensland education policy that explicitly focusses on GLBTIQ student issues, which would ideally provide detailed guidance around these issues for Queensland schools.
