Abstract

How might we decolonise language and include languages that are placed in the margins of Global North market economies? To address this question, the chapter focuses on African migrant languages and their positionings in the margins of the market economy in the Global North context of Australia. The analysis draws on evidence from the formal economy, the informal economy and community language maintenance among African diasporas in Australia. The chapter concludes with a discussion of strategies to decolonise ideologies that invisibilise and diminish the value of oral-based African languages in Australia.
