Define journalism; not journalists

Research output: Book/ReportOther report

Abstract

In a Policy Paper for the University of Queensland, I look at how the digital revolution has rendered meaningless old understandings of what a journalist is. I then go on to propose a new approach to a legal definition by focussing on the process of journalism. Such an approach is likely to survive any changes to the technological or professional environment, provide positive pressure on the industry to raise its standards, and help restore a degree of public trust in the media. Part 1 of this series is a Background Briefing examining existing definitions of ‘journalist’ under Australian law.
