Abstract

The number of Internet of Things (IoT) applications in smart home has been increasing at a rapid pace. IoT system not only provide a convenient and safer environment, but also reduces energy waste and electricity costs for home owners. Nevertheless, there are substantial challenges for implementing the IoT system in reality. In this paper, we proposed an end-to-end IoT solution for 'smart energy monitoring system' within a smart home context based on our envisaged and fully implemented smart sockets. We also compared the measurement accuracy of our proposed smart sockets with a commercial power meter. Utilizing different open-source IoT technologies, our system offers a cost-efficient solution while ensuring that the measurement accuracy of smart sockets remains at par with that of commercial power meters. It further collects data and control the devices in real time via a customized mobile application which could prove beneficial for analyzing the behavior of energy consumers.11Our Demo could be accessed online at: https://youtu.be/j4WpVLL04K8
