Abstract

A novel concept for a thermoelectric actuator comprised of shape memory alloy and Peltier elements is proposed. The shape memory alloy is heated or cooled simultaneously by Peltier elements allowing an efficient and quick movement to be achieved. The thermoelectric actuator has the potential to be implemented in an artificial heart muscle. The artificial heart muscles were designed and constructed and their performance was measured. It was capable of a reciprocating motion with a 1 Hz cycle, which is sufficient for the actual application.
