A report on the investigation of laser operation of the novel material Er:Yb:YCa4O(BO3)3 (Er:Yb:YCOB) for the high 1.5-1.6 μm transition was presented. A tunable continuous wave (CW) laser emission from diode-pumped Er:Yb:YCOB lasers at room temperature was demonstrated. A 50 μm etalon was used and the wavelength tuning range was over 23 nm. Sum frequency conversion was also observed at 600 nm.
