Abstract

Analytical expressions are derived for permanent, induced and dispersive dipolar components of van der Waals interactions between molecules of arbitrary ellipsoidal shape in fixed positions and orientations. The method employs ellipsoidal multipolar expansions of molecular potentials recently developed by the author and coworkers. Serious errors from inadequate allowance for molecular anisometry in the standard Keesom-Debye-London theory are substantially reduced in the present treatment which recovers the standard formulae both in the isometric limit and when the intermolecular separation is large.
