    Abstract

My argument is that the problem of authority reflects a deeper epistemological crisis that can be modelled through the politics of the sensorium, the relationship between the eye and the ear as sources of knowledge. The developing confrontation between the authority of print and of oral tradition is a manifestation of a larger constellation of oppositions and it is important not to simplify the confrontation.
