Abstract

This paper presents a new time-frequency approach for estimating the Doppler spread of the received signals at the mobile unit antenna in a typical micro-cellular system with non-isotropic scattering. The proposed method uses the time-frequency distribution of the received signals to estimate their instantaneous frequency. The Doppler spread is then estimated from the instantaneous frequency. The proposed estimator is simple to implement and simulations show that unlike existing estimators, is unbiased when the scattering distribution is non-isotropic.
