Abstract

In this paper a dual-band co-planar waveguide (CPW) fed antenna integrated with a 2 × 2 array of electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure is proposed. Both the antenna and the EBG structure are designed on a thin, flexible and transparent polycarbonate substrate. The integrated antenna operates at 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz ISM bands and is suitable for wireless body area network (WBAN) applications. The 2 × 2 array of EBG structure acts as an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC), and when placed underneath the CPW antenna, reduces the backward radiation and improves the front-to-back ratio (FBR) of the antenna approximately by 9 dB for both the frequency bands. The EBG structure further helps in reducing the frequency detuning when the integrated antenna is placed on the body.
