Abstract

Current assessment methodologies on the performance of circular economy are found somewhat flawed in making a full and true evaluation. This paper presents a new approach of ecological cumulative exergy consumption analysis (ECECA) developed on the basis of exergy analysis and energy analysis, to measure possible impacts of economic activities on environment in a more comprehensive manner. To further test this method, a case study has been made on the steel making process by using ECECA in comparison with material flow accounting, exergy analysis, and energy analysis. The results show that, overcoming the apparent deficiencies in energy calculations, the ECECA proves more useful and applicable for the objectives of China's sustainable development.
