Abstract
Approximately 1.4 W of cw output is generated when a Yb:Er-co-doped double-clad silica fibre laser is pumped with the 1.064-μm output from a high power Nd:YAG laser. A maximum slope efficiency of 19% with respect to the launched pump power is produced from the fibre laser. The fibre laser-operating wavelength extends between 1.56 μm and 1.57 μm when the length of fibre was increased from 1.8 m to 7 m. Self-sustained relaxation oscillations are consistently observed in the output from the fibre laser for all fibre configurations investigated. Preliminary experiments relating to the use of the Yb:Er-co-doped fibre laser as a pump source for Tm:Ho-co-doped silica fibre lasers are also presented.
