Abstract
We have previously reported the first demonstration of laser operation in Er,Yb:YCOB with studies of the Er/spl rarr/Yb energy transfer process to identify the optimum dopant concentrations. In this paper we will present efficient diode-pumped laser operation of this crystalline material at 1.55 μm. 110 mW has been obtained with a 1.6 W cw fibre-coupled diode laser pump and 250 mW cw with a 2.8 W fibre-coupled pump, both in TEM/sub 00/ transverse mode.
