Abstract
Microstructure of mesoporous SBA-2 has been investigated by using transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The material consists of two phases based on hexagonal close-packed and cubic close-packed supercages. These two phases co-exist in domains and synthesis of monophasic specimen has not so far been achieved. Three morphologies, i.e. solid spheres, hollow spheres and flat plates, have been recorded and their formation mechanisms are discussed.
