Exploring the meaning of “learning” in Learning Health Systems: establishing core principles of evaluation

Healthcare systems are interrelated, responsive, dynamic entities that aim to improve personal health while balancing population experiences and systemic responses. The concept of the Learning Health System (LHS) has evolved over the past decade as a system that re-uses data generated through healthcare delivery to answer developmental and operational questions. LHS evaluation, based on core principles, would provide powerful evidence to enable the Health System as a whole to Learn about its own challenges and outcomes in addressing citizens’ health. Through structured discussion and collaborative design, the aim of this workshop is to establish LHS evaluation principles, facilitating not only evaluation of individual resources, but also the system as a whole.
