    Abstract

A smart antenna system formed by a circular array of 7 monopoles with one active central element surrounded by a concentric ring of 6 passive elements is investigated. Originally, 3 peripheral elements are short circuited and 3 are open circuited to obtain beams in 6 different directions. Here, reactive loads are being used to improve the resolution of a smart antenna's beam steering. With the introduction of reactive loading, the array is able to steer its beam in 36 different directions. Increased gain of at least 0.5dB is also noted.
