    Abstract

(Chemical Equation Presented) A facile synthesis of α-substituted γ-hydroxybutenolides from 3-furfural was achieved using a Baylis-Hillman reaction followed by singlet oxygen oxidation. The regioselectivity of this conversion was controlled by using TBAF.
