Abstract

Introduction: The RCPAQAP Haematology has undertaken an exercise to review the internal quality control protocol for FBC instrumentation as well as review the action taken by laboratories when non-conforming results are evident in the RCPAQAP proficiency.

Methods: A questionnaire was sent to laboratories enrolled in the RCPAQAP FBC module. Laboratories were asked to provide information with regards to the type of control measures used within their testing environment that would trigger alerts for non-conforming events. The questionnaire also reviewed the action taken by laboratories in response to non-conforming other myeloproliferative neoplasms 5/39 (13%) and other diagnoses 3/39 (8%). The feedback received covered the ease of navigation of the virtual scans, the speed to upload and the image quality.

Conclusions: This pilot survey concluded that laboratories are able to manage an online virtual bone marrow morphology survey. As a result the RCPAQAP will introduce a bone marrow morphology module in 2016, which will offer virtual scanned images of the peripheral blood, bone marrow aspirate and bone marrow trephine. Participants will be asked to provide a differential on the bone marrow aspirate, describe the features in both the bone marrow aspirate and trephine and provide a diagnostic interpretation.
