Abstract

Film piracy is a $5 billion industry, which puts at risk future investment in creative industries and deprives artists of an income. Fortunately, it is also a fertile case study for the applicability of open source intelligence (OSINT) techniques, since all users who download infringing content are liable to be observed, and forensically sound data about their activities can be acquired, with a view to criminal or civil remedies. This chapter reviews some recent cases in this area from Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
